One of the many "other" tree lighting ceremonies in New York is at my mom's favourite park - Bryant Park. While Rockerfeller gets its 77 foot tree and 100,000 people (I was there at the beginning but that location is a bust - can't see anything -- you have a better view on TV!), Bryant Park is much more subdued. In our favour, Hamidah and I ended up with front row seats next to the ice rink where half the show occurred. While Rockerfeller gets the A-list headliners, Bryant Park has a more laid-back, relaxed atmosphere and their entertainment was around a few ice skating performances - Olympic figure skater, Micheal Weiss; Japanese pair Chris & Cathy Reed (yes they are Japanese and yes their names are Chris & Cathy Reed - I didn't believe it either!); and 2 skating troupes - The Ice Company of New York - dressed like Santa Clauses and the Haydenettes - who are a group of 16 synchronized skaters and are the current US National champions and World Bronze Medalists - and some musical performances. Gracing the stage included Wilson Phillips, Graham Phillips (no relation - he is the son of Julianna Margulies on The Good Wife), Mateo, Charice, 9-year old music progidy Ethan Bortnick and Broadway stars from Elf, Billy Elliott and Rock of Ages.
A few videos of the performances...
